Healthy Vacationing (+ Puerto Vallarta Trip Giveaway!)

This time next week we’ll be in the middle of a 7 1/2 hour road trip with two kids – a pre-schooler and toddler.

The best thing about the trip – they’ve both honed the question, “Are we there yet?”

Is that built in or something?

To make matters worse, the kids only want treats.

It is so challenging to keep kids healthy on-the-go.

A couple years ago, when J.C. was an only child – around 2 years old – he started throwing apple slices.

“I don’t like these!”

He does like apple slices, but on the fourth day of vacation and the fourth day of the kids’ meal healthy option – he may have been over it.

“I want a Frosty!”

I looked at the Frosty Jr. I had ordered him and told him he needed to eat an apple slice. He took a small bite, and once again explained, “I don’t like this.” I looked at the melting frosty and urgently told him he needed to eat it before getting the Frosty, and he better hurry because it was melting. About an hour later he finished the apple slice and I handed back the now melted ice cream (does that count as chocolate milk – maybe a little healthier?).

You can log his final lunch on our trip as – four chicken nuggets, an apple slice and chocolate milk (ah, okay – ice cream).

Just when I was feeling like mom of the year – I got this text from the friend I was vacationing with who was also road-tripping, “My daughter’s dinner was goldfish, an apple and graham crackers.”

I’m not alone – it’s just hard to feed our children healthy on-the-go.

Since that trip I’ve learned a few tips.

Here’s our healthy vacation snack list:
– Raisins
– Cheerios, Life cereal, Chex
– Apple slices
– Frozen grapes
– Carrots
– Yogurt
– Fig bars
– Granola or cereal bars

To start the trip, I always start with bagged lunches so we can make it to our destination eating a little healthier than we will the rest of the vacation week. If you’re eating out with food allergies on vacation – make sure to check out these helpful hints.

Now to the good stuff. The big giveaway!
