Christ in Christmas: Quick Ornaments with the Kids

I asked my son why we celebrate Christmas.

He responded, “It’s really all about Jesus.”

Phew. I dodged a bullet. Thankfully the true meaning of Christmas wasn’t lost in the excessive commercialized Christmas at our house. Between the shopping, reading How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Elmo’s 12 Days of Christmas, sipping hot chocolate while watching Polar Express – somehow he still got the message.

So I’m not totally failing.

Here’s a quick last-minute way to teach your children about Christ (if you celebrate it as a Christian holiday!) this season.

My son knows the story of Christ’s birth pretty well. We have a nativity (about it he said, “I just love that beautiful set”).

That’s why this year I’m trying to also talk about what makes Christ so special and how we can be like him.

Enter: Attributes of Christ Christmas Ornaments

This is so quick, you could do it right now. For the most part I grabbed odds and ends around my house.
What You’ll Need:
– A Bible (check out that link for a FREE copy for your Kindle)
– Craft Supplies
    – scissors
    – craft paper
    – crayons/markers/colored pencils
    – glue stick
    – yarn
    – hole punch

We started by reading stories about Christ and his attributes (I found all of these references in the LDS Family Home Evening Resource Book). By the way, these verses from the King James Version were very similar to other versions I cross-referenced with (in case you’re looking to skip the actual scripture and go with the story instead).

1. He loved Little Children – Mark 10:13-16
2. He helped the Sick & the Handicapped – Mark 6:53-56, 7:31-35
3. He was Kind – John 4:6-10
4. He was Forgiving – Luke 23:34
5. He showed us how to Pray – Matthew 6:5-13
6. He was Honest and Taught the Importance of Truth – John 8:32
After reading through the scriptures I handed out a pre-cut circle. These would become our ornaments.
Everyone chose an attribute – and decorated their ornament appropriately. I cut a hole through the top of the paper, put some yarn in – and wha-la! Our ornaments were done!
Now they’re hanging on our Christmas tree.
